Sometimes, however, it is forgotten that one of the highest peaks in the country, with its 3360 metres above sea level, is in Sicily: Mount Etna. From December to the end of March – depending on the climatic conditions - cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering and snowboarding are possible on the volcano. There are two ski resorts, situated on the northern and southern slopes. In the north, “Piano Provenzana” – 1800 metres above sea level – has two ski lifts and a modern chairlift; on the clearest days, there is a magnificent view to be enjoyed, taking in Taormina, the Strait of Messina and even the Aeolian Islands. On the southern slope, at 1910 metres above sea level, there is the “Rifugio Sapienza” skiing area: here there is a cableway seating six, a two- seat chairlift and three ski lifts, from where the spectacular view of the Gulf of Catania and, in the distance, the extreme tip of Siracusa, can be enjoyed. This side offers 10 km of slopes.

At Christmas, skiing in Sicily... is possible.
