New cement storage silo for Cycna Aguascalientes (Mexico)

The cement plant belongs to Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, S.C.L., a major Mexican business group whose wide range of products and services has fostered employment, development and growth across its areas of influence.

The cement plant belongs to Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, S.C.L., a major Mexican business group whose wide range of products and services has helped foster employment, development and growth across its areas of influence. The La Cruz Azul Business Group comprises numerous companies organised into three main areas, cooperatives, social enterprises and horizontal development companies, all created to generate economic, social and environmental value and to promote sustainable development. La Cruz Azul's industrial plants are the foundation of the Mexican group's commercial success; among them, the Cementos y Concretos Nacionales SA production unit in Aguascalientes holds a prominent place.

PROJECT PHASES

In February 2017 Teamnetwork was awarded the order for the structural calculations and detailed design of the reinforced concrete works for a new cement storage silo with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes (built locally to TNW engineering), the design of the steel structures (built locally to TNW engineering), the manufacture and supply of the machinery conveying cement to the silo, the extraction and bulk loading system, and the design and supply of the electrical and automation system, including the interface with the existing plant. With the supply and shipping of materials from Italy completed between October and November 2017, the project has now reached its final stages, with cold tests, load tests and commissioning under the supervision of our specialists.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Cement from the vertical mill is conveyed to the top of the new reinforced concrete silo (internal diameter 14 m, overall height 44 m, capacity 5,000 tonnes of ordinary Portland cement) by air slides and by a rubber-belt bucket elevator with a centre distance of 51 m. Cement is distributed to the storage silos (the new silo and three existing ones) by a series of air slides (capacity 180 t/h) installed on the walkway connecting the new silo (no. 6) with the adjacent silos. A bag filter (capacity 5,000 m3/h) has been fitted on top of the new silo to dedust the elevator head and the feeding air slides. The silo bottom, of inverted-cone design, is divided into four extraction sectors, each separately aerated and equipped with a manual gate valve, a motorised shut-off valve and a pneumatically operated dosing roller. A series of air slides carries the cement from the four extraction sectors to a central hopper, from which two dosing rollers regulate the flow of cement to the bulk loading system through further air slides; part of the cement can also be routed by air slide to the elevator and recirculated back to the silos. The retractable bulk loading spout (travel 2,500+2,500 mm, hourly capacity 250 tonnes), with double inner and outer bellows, has a rubber end cone that seals perfectly against the tanker hatch and a cast-iron counter-cone with end-of-loading sensors and level indicators. The bulk cement loading lane is equipped with a weighbridge for the automatic control and management of the quantity of cement loaded onto each vehicle. The cement silo is dedusted by a flush-mounted bag filter (capacity 3,000 m3/h) installed on the silo roof, while the extraction unit is served by a bag filter fitted inside the cone (capacity 8,000 m3/h).
